“Hey, She Stopped Liking the Food”

Nearly four months ago, we changed our three greyhounds and cat to a different brand of food that is holistic and healthy. Was it all smooth sailing from there? Let’s see how the process went . . .

We had previously been feeding them a major brand of commercial food that we bought at the grocery store.

Once they had made the change (it should be a gradual process), they all ate with great enthusiasm. They clearly loved the new food.

But then over a period of several weeks, we noticed something. They were no longer dancing and barking (okay, not the cat) at mealtime. In fact, they sometimes didn’t go right to their bowls. And when they did, they no longer ate to the bottom of the bowl.

What did this mean? Did it mean that they no longer liked the food?

No. In fact, instead of being a day to worry about the dogs and cat and wonder whether they’d ever eat the food again, it really is quite the opposite.

When we feed our dogs and cats low-quality food that contains corn, wheat, or soy or that contains very low-grade (actually disgusting) protein sources, like meat and bone meal and meat byproducts, we are actually starving them of nutrition. Processes that their bodies need to carry ou (cell regeneration, for example) are slowed way down, because there isn’t enough of the right nutrition to support them.

So when we change to a nutritious food like Life’s Abundance, their bodies have catch-up work to do. During that time, the dog or cat may seem just as enthusiastic as ever about mealtime. But once that repair work is done or at least well under way, their bodies no longer crave food like they used to. Instead, they can calm down and eat what they actually need, which might be less than we expect.

So that day when Glory the greyhound (pictured above) came late to breakfast, that day when Logan the greyhound ate only part of his bowl, that day when Lucy the cat didn’t eat her breakfast for hours . . . those were days to celebrate! And celebrate we did!
